Protest have sparked all over the globe due to the murder of 46-year-old Black man, George Floyd, who died in Minneapolis, Minnesota after a white police officer, named, Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying down on the street as two other police officers restrained Floyd and one stood close by as the murder was being transpired.

On the evening of May 25, 2020, George Floyd purchased cigarettes at Cup Foods, grocery store in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood of Minneapolis, just before 8pm and exited the store and crossed the street and entered his vehicle while two other adults sat in the SUV. One of the store employees believed that the twenty dollar bill that Floyd purchased the cigarettes with, was counterfeit so, two other employees from the store followed Floyd to his SUV and demanded that Floyd, must return the cigarettes but Floyd refused while the interaction was being filmed on the restaurant’s security camera.

The same store employee that accused Floyd of buying cigarettes with counterfeit money, decided to call the Police, to report that George had passed fake bills, was drunk and wasn’t in control of himself.

At 8:08pm, two officers, Kueng and Lane arrived, briefly entering Cup Foods before crossing the street to where Floyd was at. Lane immediately drew his gun and ordered Floyd to put his hands on the steering wheel, Floyd complied.

Following a brief struggle, Lane pulled Floyd from the SUV and handcuffed him. Then, Kueng sat Floyd on the sidewalk against the wall in front of the restaurant while Floyd reportedly was calm before telling him he was under arrest.

Kueng and Lane grabbed Floyd and walked him to the Police car across the street and suddenly, Floyd fell on the ground next to the car and the officers picked him up and placed him against the car’s door. According to prosecutors, Floyd told the officers that he was not resisting but that he didn’t want to sit in the police car because he was claustrophic while a third police car pulled up with officers, Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao, who joined Kueng and Lane.

According to prosecutors, George told the officers, he could not breathe while they all tried to force him the Police car as the security camera catches the struggle between Kueng and Floyd for a minute in the driver side backseat as Thao watches.

At 8:19pm, standing on the passenger side of the vehicle, Chauvin pulled Floyd across the backseat from the driver side to the passenger side, then out of the car. Floyd, still handcuffed, fell to the pavement where he lay on his chest with his cheek to the ground. Floyd stopped moving around 8:20pm, though he was still conscious.

At 8:20pm, Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck, Kueng applying pressure to Floyd’s legs while Thao stood nearby as Floyd repeated at least sixteen times that he could not breathe.
After Floyd stated, I’m about to die, Chauvin told him to relax. Then another officer asked, Floyd, what do you want? Floyd replies, I can’t breathe; please, the knee in my neck, I can’t breathe.

Two minutes later, the officers called for an ambulance on a non-emergency basis, escalating the call to emergency status a minute later as Chauvin continued to kneel on Floyd’s neck. A witness who walked by, yelled at Floyd, get up, get in the car, man and Floyd answered, I can’t while he remained handcuffed and face down on the ground while Chauvin still had his knee on Floyd’s neck.

Floyd cried out, “Mama!” twice. Floyd also cried out, “My stomach hurts, my neck hurts, everything hurts”, requested water, and begged, “Don’t kill me.

Several witnesses were crowding around the scene and one witness, told one of the officers, he’s not even resisting. Then Thao interjected, saying, he’s fine. He’s not fine, get off of him, you could have put him back in the car by now, He’s not resisting or nothing, you’re enjoying it, look at you, your body language explains it all, shouted back, that one witness as Floyd continued to cry for help before Thao states, to some of the witnesses, “ This is why you don’t do drugs, kids.”

Several minutes later, Floyd appeared to be unconscious while witnesses started to confront the officers until Chauvin pulled out mace to keep away as Thao moved in between the witnesses and Chauvin before the crowd started making a fuss by repeatedly yelling, he’s not responsive, check his pulse. Kueng checked his wrist but no pulse was found.

Shortly thereafter, Emergency Medical Technicians checked Floyd’s pulse. Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost a minute after the ambulance arrived, despite Floyd being silent and motionless. When he finally did lift his knee, it had been there for a total of eight minutes and forty-six seconds.

Floyd was pronounced dead at 9:25 at the Hennepin County Medical Center emergency room and all Police officers that were involved have been all fired plus, Kueng, Lane and Thao were charged with aiding and abetting in Floyd’s death and Chauvin has been charged with second and third degree unintentional murder and second degree manslaughter.

I have so many views on this matter that I can’t even fathom the words to express my anger so, I’m a just say this, Black people have been oppressed for four hundred plus years and this has to stop and it will stop because we going to make it stop, we matter just like any other race and I believe George Floyd’s murder was the tipping of the iceberg and it was shown globally what Blacks have been encountering for centuries and this will be the change. Say his name – George Floyd. Rest In Peace, King; we’re fighting for you.
